Police baton-charge a doctor during President’s motorcade

Kathmandu: A doctor of Bir Hospital was baton-charged by police while on his way to work.

His fault: He was walking on the road during the president’s convoy.  

The incident happened when police blocked the road for President Bidya Devi Bhandari’s visit to Sheetal Niwas from the parliament. Dr Janith Singh, who was on his way to join his duty, has sustained injuries to his head. 

The incident sparked outrage among the medical community, with doctors staging a protest and blocking the road in front of Bir Hospital for half an hour. 

The police have been criticized for their use of excessive force and for denying a comment on the issue. The Nepal Medical Association (NMA) has now given a 24-hour ultimatum to the government to take action against the police responsible for the incident.
