Kathmandu: Ministers from CPN-UML in the Pushpa Kamal Dahal-led government tendered their resignation on Monday following the party’s decision to pull out of the government earlier today. Following the breakup of alliance between CPN-UML and Maoist Center over the upcoming presidential election, UML took the decision to withdraw its support to the Dahal-led government.
There were eight ministers in the government from UML. The team of UML ministers led by Deputy Prime Minister and Finance Minister Bishnu Paudel reached the official residence of the PM in Baluwatar to submit their resignation.
Other ministers from UML included Minister for Agriculture Jwala Kumari Sah, Foreign Minister Bimala Rai Paudyal, Minister of Industry, Commerce and Supplies Damodar Bhandari, Minister for Health and Population Padam Giri, Minister of Defense Hari Upreti, Minister of Women, Children and Senior Citizens Bhagawati Chaudhary, and Minister of Land Reforms Rajendra Kumar Rai.
The CPN-UML was sore with the prime minister after the former canceled the visit of Foreign Minister Bimala Rai Paudyal on Sunday who was about to take a flight to Geneva to participate in the 50th regular session of the Human Rights Council. UML has decried the PM’s decision to stop the visit of foreign minister and sending a former minister, Govinda Bandi, to participate in the event in the capacity of an advisor.
Rift appeared in the alliance after Prime Minister Dahal, who is also the chair of Maoist Center, took the decision to support Nepali Congress candidate Ram Chandra Paudel in the presidential election which is scheduled for March 9.
Dahal had become the prime minister with the support of CPN-UML.
