Kathmandu: Hari Budha Magar, former Gurkha soldier who lost both legs in Afghanistan, has left for Solukhumbu to climb the Mount Everest, the highest peak of the world.
He is going to climb Everest with the help of his prosthetic (artificial) legs. After taking formal approval from agencies to climb Mt Everest, he said: “After five years of hardships, I am happy to have finally been allowed to climb Mount Everest.”
He expressed his belief in bringing happiness to Nepalis after his successful ascent of Mount Everest as it will help awaken confidence in other friends like him. I want to show that people with physical disabilities are not weaker than anyone else, he added.
Budha Magar informed that it would take two months for him to climb Mount Everest. He lost both his legs in 2010 in the war in Afghanistan.
He is the first person who lost both his legs below the knee who trekked to Everest Base Camp with the help of artificial legs.
Budhamgar has climbed Mont Blanc (4,810 meters), Chulu Far East (6,059 meters), Kilimanjaro (5,895 meters), and Mera Peak (6,476 meters). He climbed Mera Chuchu in 2017 and became the first above-knee (both amputees) double amputee to climb the mountain above 6,000 meters.
He was born in 1979 in Mirul village in Rolpa district. He has also made a record by becoming the first person who went ‘skydiving’ reaching the Everest base camp with the help of artificial legs.
