Kathmandu: In a major action by Nepal Police, Nepali Congress leader and former Home Minister Bal Krishna Khand has been arrested in alleged connection to creating fake Bhutanese refugees by extracting hefty sum from the Nepali citizens by promising to take them to the US.

This comes in the wake of the audio tape leakage which claimed that a large sum of money was paid to Manju Khand, the spouse of former minister.

Police on Wednesday arrested Khand from his Chabahil-based home in Kathmandu.

According to police, Khand was arrested after they found ‘some evidence’ relating to the involvement of Khand in the fake Bhutanese refugee scam.

However, Top Bahadur Rayamajhi of CPN-UML, who stands accused in this scam, is still at large.

Fake Bhutanese refugee scam has created a ruckus in Nepal’s parliament and the streets.  The government and the top political parties are blamed of trying to protect the guilty instead of helping the law enforcement agencies to investigate the case impartially. Experts have warned that Nepal’s failure to investigate the case impartially and bring the guilty to book will have a huge setback in its international image.
