Govt preparing to release Tikapur massacre convict Resham Chaudhary from jail

Just a week after the Supreme Court upheld Resham Chaudhary’s life sentence, the government is now preparing to release him by granting clemency through the Office of the President.

Kathmandu: Just a week after the Supreme Court upheld the decisions of lower courts to convict Resham Lal Chaudhary in 2015 Tikapur Massacre, the government is now preparing to grant clemency to him. He is currently serving life imprisonment at Dillibazar Prison in Kathmandu. 

Chaudhary was convicted and sentenced to life imprisonment in a violent incident that killed seven security personnel and a minor in the Tikapur Massacre in 2015. The government has sent the proposal to the President’s Office through the Ministry of Home Affairs.

The Office of the President is preparing to grant clemency to Chaudhary on May 29, on the occasion of Republic Day.

According to a source at the President Office, President Ram Chandra Paudel is in consultation with legal experts to grant clemency to Chaudhary. “Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal Prachanda has also been discussing the issue with the President.”

Article 276 of the Constitution of Nepal provisions that the President may pardon, postpone, change or reduce the sentence imposed by any court, judicial or quasi-judicial body or administrative officer or body in accordance with the law.
